The Melbourne Stars are on the hunt for a new coach after Stephen Fleming opted not to seek a contract extension with the club.
It’s understood the Stars were keen for Fleming to continue with the club for a fifth season at the helm, but the former New Zealand captain decided he didn’t want to remain for another year.
Fleming has business interests away from cricket and is also coaching the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. With the BBL season expanded to two months, it was ultimately too great a commitment for him to continue despite the temptation of going on for another season in the hope of avenging this year’s narrow defeat in the final against the Renegades.
“Stephen has been a wonderful servant of the Melbourne Stars and we completely respect his decision to step down as head coach. He has left a large footprint on the club which we will be forever grateful for,” Stars president Eddie McGuire said.
