As part of a global movement, strike days are planned for March 15 and Sept. 27.
The collective La Planète s’invite à l’université is calling on CEGEP and university students in Quebec to participate in strike days to push for action on climate change March 15 and Sept. 27.
The call to strike has already been issued in other countries and Quebec students are eager to join the movement, the organizers said during a press conference Friday at Université du Québec à Montréal.
Born of the concern young people have about the indifference toward the climate crisis, the collective has quickly flourished, with groups mobilizing at Université de Montréal, UQAM, École de technologie supérieure, Concordia University, McGill University, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Université Laval, CEGEP Montmorency, CEGEP Lionel-Groulx, CEGEP Saint-Laurent, Collège de Montréal and elsewhere.
The partners in the collective believe that a strike day is the best way to make their point, to show their seriousness and determination and push political decision-makers to reflect.
Among its goals, the collective wants to see an ecological education and awareness program developed and a law making Quebec’s climate goals obligatory, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
