Marquand leaves door ajar for Australian return after EI outbreak hits

Summer sensation Tom Marquand won’t completely rule out returning to Australia in a matter of weeks if the equine influenza outbreak in the United Kingdom lingers into the start of the European flat season.

English-based Marquand, who has impressed in a short stint in Australia over the holiday period, will jet out of Sydney on Saturday night just hours after riding at the $2 million Inglis Millennium raceday at Warwick Farm.

He will return to an uncertain immediate future in his homeland, where the British Horseracing Authority has cancelled  racing until next Wednesday at the earliest.

Asked about the possibility of a swift return to Australia if the cancellation is extended, Marquand said: «If racing doesn’t manage to get up and going again in the next few weeks it would be something I would consider, but I’d be very surprised if it went for more than a couple of weeks.
