Quebec’s taxi industry is poised to received $500 million in compensation from the Legault government.

Quebec Transport Minister François Bonnardel made the announcement Wednesday as he tabled proposed legislation that, if adopted, is expected to send shock waves through the existing passenger transportation industry.

The legislation aims to deregulate that industry by reducing the number of costly prerequisites that have to be paid by taxi drivers and allow them to use a sliding fare scale similar to that used by the Uber ride-sharing service.
